Astana - The Venice Commission and the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan organised on 8th and 9th December 2022 in Astana, an international conference entitled “Adversarial trial and equality of arms in criminal proceedings”.
The conference was held in a hybrid format and was opened by the Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr Zhakyp Asanov. This event saw the participation of high-level representatives from the Venice Commission (Estonia, Georgia, Ireland, Moldova and UK), Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan).
The conference was followed by an exchange of views organised back-to-back on 9th December 2022 in Astana in cooperation with the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan. This second event aimed to take stock of the judicial reforms in the country and highlight the cooperation between the Venice Commission and the Republic of Kazakhstan as regards the reforms in the judiciary, including the follow-up given to several opinions of the Commission.
The two events were organised in the framework of the joint European Union – Council of Europe Central Asia Rule of Law Programme 2020-2023. The programme is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
