Lima – A delegation of the Venice Commission travelled to Lima in the framework of the preparation of the draft opinion on the constitutional reform regarding early elections proposed by the President of Peru.
The delegation led by the Commission’s Secretary Mr Thomas Markert, met with the Speaker and representatives of different political groups of the Congress, the Presidency, representatives of the Council of Ministers and members of the Constitutional Court. The delegation also exchanged views with Peruvian lawyers specialised in constitutional law.
The visit was organised in the framework of the joint EU-Council of Europe project “Support to reforms of electoral legislation and practice and regional Human Rights instruments and mechanisms in countries of Latin America, Central Asia and Mongolia”, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Venice Commission.
The draft opinion, requested by the Speaker of the Peruvian Congress, was on the agenda of the October plenary session.
