Santiago – In the framework of the preparation of the draft opinion on the new Constitution of Chile, a delegation of the Venice Commission visited Chile in order to meet with the following interlocutors:
• President of the Senate and a group of senators;
• President of the Republic and the Minister of Justice;
• Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies;
• President, vice-President and members of the Constitutional Convention;
• the Constitutional and Supreme Courts;
• Minister of Foreign Affairs and Subsecretary of the Ministry General Secretariat of the Presidency (in the government designated by the newly elected President Gabriel Boric);
• former Presidents of Chile, Messrs Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle and Ricardo Lagos Escobar;
• the Bar Association, Association of Judges, national academia, Director of the Technical Secretariat for popular participation of the Constitutional Assembly and several national NGOs.
The delegation also had an exchange of views with the EU ambassador and a group of ambassadors of EU countries in Chile.
The visit was funded in the framework of the joint EU-Council of Europe project “Support to reforms of electoral legislation and practice and regional Human Rights instruments and mechanisms in countries of Latin America, Central Asia and Mongolia”, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Venice Commission.
The draft opinion will be presented for adoption during the March plenary session (18-19 March 2022).
