Armenia – online meetings on forthcoming opinion concerning the judiciary

08/11/2023

On 8 November a delegation of the Venice Commission and the Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law (DGI) of the Council of Europe held online discussions with the Armenian authorities and other stakeholders on the Concept Paper concerning the reform of the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee of the General Assembly of Judges.

This follows a request for an opinion on the above Concept Paper by the Minister of Justice of Armenia on 26 September. This opinion is prepared jointly with the DGI of the Council of Europe and will be submitted for adoption at the 137th Plenary Session of the Venice Commission (15-16 December).

The delegation met with the following interlocutors: Head of the Supervision Department of the Ministry of Justice and the Director of the Center for Legislative Development foundation, Chair of the Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs of the National Assembly, President of the Court of Cassation, Chairperson of the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission and members of the Supreme Judicial Council. Meetings were also held with representatives of the international community and civil society organisations.

The opinion will be prepared under the Quick Response Mechanism (QRM), in the framework of the EU/CoE joint programme Partnership for Good Governance, funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
